The Whims of War

In 1983 my grandfather wrote his recollections of WWII on his typewriter, filling twelve single-spaced, legal-sized pages. The first nine pages formed a mostly chronological narrative; the next two comprised ‘random notes’ and ‘addenda’; the last page answered a number of follow-up questions posed by his son (my uncle) Peter.

In 2009 Peter and I collaborated to digitize and edit the text—mostly correcting typos and misspellings and standardizing place names. In 2014 and 2017 we supplemented the text with a few additional footnotes that provide historical context or clarify points of ambiguity.

One-color saddle-stitched booklet. Set in Hypatia by Thomas Phinney. Text written by Walt Hepokoski, edited by Peter Hepokoski and H. Designed and typeset by H. Printed and distributed to Hepokoski family members and various Minnesota historical societies in 2010.
